I had been trying to frame these nested time phases much less eloquently, but still in a broad evolutionary context.

I got this sequence

Cosmo~Logical

Geo~Logical

Eco-Logical

Ego-Logical

within a larger Evo-Logical context ;-)

In terms of ambitions / goals is it to much to hope for

CLEAN;

~ Air

~ Water

~ Food

~ Relations (bonds", interdependence)

~ Soil

Thanks Rob. I find it hard to know exactly what chronological sequence to place them in, and that's partly because it's not really a chronological argument or experience - it's more a recognition that what we are experiencing is connected to what happened back then. I wonder about Pullman's 'subtle knife' in this context; almost like the present is a composite colour made of various historic streams, each of which has its own colour...but I'm not sure that works because each of them would be multi-coloured too. I suspect it would only work if the division were ontological. I'll see if that thought goes anywhere...

Interesting Jonathan "COLOUR" from a perception perspective is a projection as many of our holographic / interpretations of a reality we sense is out there there but science tells us we are assembling "within" our biological VR/AR Headset ...

Which leads some of us to take our heads off in. Douglas Harding way ... www. headless.org and know in the experiential way how even epistemology and ontology go beyond our comprehension if we adopt Stan Bergs

Oh do i love this wondrous reflection, Jonathan. May your local Mr. Whippy be the very last to leave us.

PS Have the Shapley Attractor and Dipole Repeller appeared in your view? They put quite a spin on things…

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Wow.

I didn't know about them at all. It's like coincidentia oppositorium at a cosmic scale.

Thanks.

Brilliant. A question that is for me deep, not tongue-in-cheek; how does all this inform your parenting?

Very grateful for this work 🙏

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Thanks, Sadie. These days I take all necessary parenting advice from a colony of Icelandic fairies that recently appeared in our garden.

Sadie Rittman's avatar

🤣 very generous of them!

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Believe it or not, my younger son came home from art class yesterday with a drawing that looks very much like a fairy in the garden...

Oh I definitely believe it… ;)

I’m presenting a paper on elves for the metacrisis in London in May!

Brilliant, Jonathan. I’ve admired many of your pieces, but this is one of your best yet.

The timescales you describe are real, and something that I recognise both from my work with the u3a group over the last three years, and, indeed, from my last 45 years experience.

You quote MacIntyre, “Of what story or stories do I find myself a part?” And then you tell the stories beautifully. But stories are a double edge sword. As Harari argued persuasively, they are the basis on which all human civilisation has been built. But as I have only recently recognised, their very attractiveness to us humans runs the risk of drawing our attention not to that which they point to, but to the finger that points. Instead of turning to how nature has regulated itself for billions of years, we look towards the human intelligence that weaves the compelling stories with the truth they contain.

That is what I have recognised since I conducted that funeral for human supremacy at Renaissance. And since then, my whole focus has been on the question your piece once again brought into focus for me: how do we attend to what the stories are pointing to, and not to the stories themselves?

With great respect and gratitude,

Terry

Co-incidentally (or not) the morning I read your post I received news of a PhD thesis on EVOLUTIONARY COSMOLOGY. But maybe more seriously, who do you mean by 'we' in this post? And did you not write about different 'we's' a while ago. Very much thinking of Escobar et al Relationality who point out how easily we speak of modern man as if he represents the whole human species

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Hi Peter, I have written about 'the impossible we' and 'the aspirational we' in various places, and I am getting clearer about it as I go. But I also wrote "Forgive yourself for speaking on behalf of the world". This 'unintelligible We' problem is baked into natural language. It's necessary to see it and acknowledge it, but it's strenuous to always make it the plot, rather than the setting.

Peter Reason's avatar

Yes, Jonathan. Forgive oneself (again and again and again) as Sheldon Kopp instructs us. But I am increasingly aware that we in the minority world so often write ‘we’, or ‘the human species’ as if we can speak for the whole of humanity. We can’t, and our way of seeing the world is an aberration, not the norm.

If you haven't and you've got the time, Raymond Tallis's book, Of Time and Lamentation is a timely read.

On ice cream trucks, in the summer of 1973 I drove one in an area where century-old villages alternated with new suburban development in southeastern Michigan. The people in both were of similar economic status (the automobile industry in the region was still at its peak), but starkly different affect. The villagers were often out in their yards with neighbors and extended family playing, gardening, and happy to come up to my truck and joke with the ice cream man in a variety of folksy voices. The suburbanites would emerge from their homes, across their carefully trimmed lawns, and not get beyond the economic exchange for their bomb pops. They all spoke in standard American TV accents. When the parents came out with their kids, I sometimes felt they were scared of the ice cream man. There was no humor from them.

On the history of colonialism, dating it back to only the 1500s may be anachronistic. The Norse for instance colonized the north of England as well as Normandy in the 900s, Sicily in the 1000s, Naples by the 1100s. Sicily had also been colonized by Phoenicians and Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, and Arabs before, and Spanish Bourbons afterwards. (My wife, one-quarter Sicilian, shows no sign of having inherited these multiple traumas.) As for England, the Norman Invasion was ... Norse. Earlier there was England as a Roman colony.

As the communist philosopher Asad Haider pointed out in his book, Mistaken Identity, politics based on identification with past guilt and past victimization serves to prevent class solidarity across races and ancestries. When those of us who are left or liberal amplify such identitarian stances, we serve as useful idiots for the oligarchs. Personally, I'm all for reparations. To achieve broad social support for them, we've got to come together first. Martin Luther King was focused on just that when he was assassinated.

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Thanks Whit. Yes, I was careless with the dating and have edited a little to soften that claim. And I'm glad to hear a response from someone with ice-cream van experience!

Cool. I think of the image of Planets Aligning. A moment of coincidence that has the power of making usually impossible things possible. A time of overwhelming.

The pertinence of different temporal scales, the metaphor of music. Crests and troughs compounding.

And is this such as to make a clearing for something original, either primeval, or originary, or both? And what that... "Slouching towards Bethlehem"?

Simon Grant's avatar

Very nice piece! However, "colonising enclosures that began in England around 1500 AD" I offer not a jot of support for colonisation or enclosure, but do these really begin there and then? I'm wondering about misplaced or exaggerated admissions of culpability, when it seems likely to me that those problems may have much deeper roots, and we have no business exonerating others. Or if there is evidence for that time and place in particular, and not elsewhere or earlier, please can you point to it?

Jonathan Rowson's avatar

Hi Simon, yes, I was a bit sloppy there, and have hedged that line a bit now with an edit. The connection between land enclosures and the broader history of colonialism is helpful, though I think, because they derive from similar mentalities.

Simon Grant's avatar

But more generally, I appreciate the thinking here, thank you!

There's a good correlation here with Cynthia B's latest post.

"It seems manifestly clear that the ordeal currently playing out on our national and worldwide viewing screen is a massive reaction— or corrective—to an unfolding that has somehow wandered badly off-course. But on what timeline is this corrective playing out, and for what purpose is it being applied? It is that “for what purpose?” that leaves me stymied and scratching my head. Immediately my mind goes to those three interpretive lenses, each offering its own analysis of the present dilemma and its own optimal path of response. I call these three lenses “historical time,” “Gebserian time,” and “Teilhardian time.”

And to flesh this out, listen to her talk about it with Katie Teague: The Signature of Our Time.

Yes! I read Cynthia’s latest post a few days later and have listened/watched the Katie Teague video more than once! Looking forward to Cynthia’s next post… I think there is plenty to say about what it means for the mental structure to be in its deficient mode, and what follows for integrating healthy magic, mythic and mental modes today so that a genuinely “new mind” can arise

And on co-incidence: does the idea that events, phenomena at different scales, coinciding, the idea that it makes a difference if they do, when they do, that they do, imply scale is real? You can't tell the story at just one scale. Events at different scales coalensce across scales to have an effect.

"Earth is over 4.5 billion years old, and yet it sometimes feels as if we don’t realise we are living on a planet, in a solar system, in outer space, that predates us, that situates us, and should humble us."

Yep. I frequently write:

=====

Modern humans, now pathologically alienated from actuality / place to the point of literal psychosis (by clinical definition) and tightly shrink wrapped in a painful but preferred (and typically defended) hallucinatory amnesia, no longer remember what they actually are: extremely vulnerable and short-lived human biological organisms.

Modern humans no longer remember where they actually exist: innately, evolutionarily, seamlessly and dependently embedded in ( and at the perpetual effect of) a tiny, twirling, externally forced, exceedingly unstable clump of space debris that is careening and wobbling around a colossal, volatile, flaming sphere (that with frequent, near-term periodicity effectively mass annihilates the life it enables) in a violently churning, thickly radiated, virus swarmed, electromagnetically charged, debris clogged ocean of space.

Modern humans no longer remember how these both actually work: generation, expansion, degeneration, dissolution, dormancy and repeat at all levels of existence.

Modern humans no longer remember what has actually happened in the past: ceaseless change from mild to wild.

This received alienation / amnesia renders the last remaining iteration of human unable to clearly notice what is actually happening now (rapid degeneration and dissolution) and incapable of comprehending what is actually, inevitably, going to happen in the near-term: civilization collapse and severe human die off.

=====

Here's what l frequently write about 'time':

- - -

Our ancient ancestors, globally and necessarily cross-generationally, for (at least) tens of thousands of years (according to modern mainstream science and anthropology), seemingly obsessively, tracked the approx 26k year cycle of equinoctial precession and methodically passed along critically important info / data by way of the very ancient, global, rational, mythopoetic mnemotechnical tradition (with its many regional variations) that was securely rooted in advanced astromathematics, astrophysics, geophysics, ecoscience, an extensive historical record and complex medical philosophies, modalities (high sciences in their own right) and psychologically sophisticated moral / social codes that were seamlessly consistent with, and clearly reflective of, the history and science. No woo woo

They did this for entirely rational reason.

They remembered, with time-tested certainty, that at the approx middle and end of this cycle a deadly and destructive geomagnetic minima / excursion / polarity reversal event occurs.

Noting that geomagnetic minima / excursion / polarity reversal events have an approx average 13k year periodicity (+/- 1k) with lesser, still deadly and destructive, geomagnetic minima events (without excursion / reversal) occurring scale invariantly distributed between the whopper excursions.

Like the geomagnetic minima event (without excursion / reversal), sandwiched between two horror show Miyake ejections (nine occurring during the past 15k years), that crashed Mayan civilization and killed countless millions of human animals globally.

Like the geomagnetic minima event (without excursion / reversal) that triggered seven significant volcanic eruptions during the first six decades of the 17th century; drove more state breakdowns than during any other historical period previous or since and killed countless millions of human animals globally.

Noting that geomagnetic field strength, which human animals depend on for sanity, sustenance, reproductive ability / physical health and life itself, has been steadily declining since 3,100 BCE. The speed of this decline significantly increased during the past 400 years ( from 5% a century to 5% a decade) with ongoing acceleration in advance of a right on time, 100% normal, deadly and destructive, geomagnetic minima / excursion or incursion (we don't know which yet) / polarity reversal event that is going to bring down this rickety civilization this century.

This rapid collapsing of the protective geomagnetic field strength is unraveling and collapsing terrestrial operating systems, including physiological / neurological, including human.

This rapid collapsing of the protective geomagnetic field strength (GFS) is driving soaring heat by way of a process known as re-radiation that increases atmospheric heat in direct proportion to declining GFS.

Noting that up to a 12 F heat increase is projected by end of century with half by midcentury (NOAA and EU climate reporting agencies).

Noting that a 22 F heat increase occurred during the Gothenburg geomagnetic minima / excursion / polarity reversal event (13k years ago).

Noting that prolonged exposure to 2 C (2035) will dependably trigger fatal heat stroke in even young, healthy, hydrated human animals resting in shade.

Noting that this civilization is kaput somewhere between now and 3 C.

The rapid collapsing of GFS is also driving rapidly expanding global drought. A quarter of the human herd live in drought conditions. Seed / soil viability are steadily declining. Photosynthesis is steadily slowing. Staple food crops are projected to crash globally by 25-39% by 2030. The world has around 70 days of 'food surplus'. Think near-term global famine.

The rapid collapsing of GFS is also creating the conditions for a nightmarish projected AMOC stop with plummeting temp fluctuations in the 10-15 C / 18-27 F range in the northern zone, a projected 4-5 billion human population reduction and even more extreme heat in the temperate zone within a decade of stopping.

Noting that an AMOC stop occurred during the Gothenburg excursion. Half the human population died off along with 72% of large mammal species and countless smaller.

The rapid collapsing of GFS is also driving extreme nonhuman die off: 65% of vertebrae species, 60% of insects, 85% of freshwater fish and 93% of ocean biomass just since 1970 with ongoing acceleration.

The rapid collapsing of GFS is also driving a rapid collapse of human fertility / sperm viability: around 60% since 1970 with the speed of this crash more than doubling during the past decade with ongoing acceleration and currently crashing at around 3% annually. At this rate, not factoring in ongoing acceleration, the last remaining iteration of human is functionally extinct in around 170 years although Henry Gee, paleontologist, evolutionary biologist and editor at Nature (dot com / in publication since 1869) has written (in Scientific American) that we might already be there: a "dead species walking".

Noting that our Neanderthal cousins (who also tracked equinoctial precession) functionally extincted during the whopper LasChamp excursion, in significant part as a result of extreme exposure to UVR that shut down reproductive ability as the protective geomagnetic field crashed to within 20-0%.

Noting that a geomagnetic minima / polarity reversal event occurred during the PETM warming / extreme extinction. This event stands out as sharp heat spike against the warming / extincting background.

Noting that human population crashed to less than 2k individual human animals during the whopper geomagnetic minima / incursion event that occurred around 800-900 BCE.

Noting that extreme heat, extreme drought, AMOC stop, extreme nonhuman die off and extreme human population reduction are all expected components of geomagnetic minima / excursion / polarity reversal events.

- - -

The last remaining iteration of human isn't in charge here in this unstable clump.

Noting that nine other iterations of human extincted during just the past 300k years as a direct or indirect effect of exoterrestrial / terrestrial conditions that nearly precisely mirror what is occurring now and projected for this very dangerous century. Tick tock ...
