Oh, Jonathan, you've got my palms all clammy just remembering this. It was such a tricky situation! DA was absolutely adamant that no one was there to hear him (ha!) and actually got quite cross with me in the Green Room when I gently tried to suggest we would all love to hear more from him (and that I had another well-known broadcaster downstairs who was briefed and booked to chair them both). Aggggh. Being dressed down by *that* iconic voice was utterly unforgettable. I can't be the only person who has felt the great man's ire, but I'm sure we're in a small club! Shudder. I tried so hard to edit those precious minutes down for a Short or Animate, but somehow it never flew.
Sensing the collective field and taking the most aligned action to change the trajectory 🙌 I can feel the nerves as you write! (And as a fellow Australian, proud of Tim!)
Thanks Lauren. Abi, whom I mention in the piece, is also Australian, and - as well as his own considerable merits - it’s possible that’s one of the reasons Tim was there!
A wonderful tribute and post, Jonathan. I think I started watching Attenborough's documentaries on Spanish TV in the middle of the 90's, and I never missed a single one.
In my childhood, the whole Spanish people of the 70's watched our 'National treasure', Feliz Rodriguez de la Fuente, the second (or first) most famous person in Spain in those years, on a level with the King. Everyone was united in watching his documentaries when there were only 2 channels in Spain. Today he will be 98, but unfortunately he died in 1980 when he was filming some documentaries in Alaska. I remember crying like never before. I was 10 years old. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A9lix_Rodr%C3%ADguez_de_la_Fuente
Thanks Jesus. Gosh, thanks for sharing that. To riff off my question, there are so many variables in public life, that I wonder if we underestimate our emotional attachment to the (relative) constants.
I do have a caveat. I used to use the same example, the abolition of slavery, to illustrate shifting norms and values. Until I realised that today there are more slaves in the world than ever before - just under different names, mainly women (and children!) captured into sex slavery, but also some other examples. What was it that happened? Did a human propensity to dominate others simply go underground? I still regard it as 'progress' that slavery is now a dirty word. But the reality...

Brilliant, yes - thank you for sharing.
